Promote videos in Adwords

With the popularity of video search over the last couple of years, Google has been looking into opportunities to make money from Youtube. Earlier this year Google introduced ads within the videos, which is very annoying to me. Google blog announces that the Promoted Videos can now be advertised via Google adowrds as opposed to seperate search advertising program. Google Blog: “in the past year Promoted Videos has evolved into a much broader discovery vehicle, appearing on search, the YouTube homepage, video watch pages and recently across the AdSense network. We’ve also built better conversion opportunities via Call-to-Action overlays. As a result, Promoted Videos is now driving millions of video views per week, with clicks having increased 500% since January. In a world where 20 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, Promoted Videos has become a critical way for creators to get their content in front of viewers across the web.”

This weeks SEOmoz whtieboard friday was interesting. Google’s Senior Developer Programmer Maile Ohye’s was interviewed and was asked some interesting questions for the SEO industry. Check out the video!!!

Online advertising ‘overtakes TV’

Although the overall spending in the recession dropped by 16%, online advertising spending in the UK overtook television spending for the first time according to a report by the BBC. According to the study by the Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers the outlay grew 4.6% to £1.752bn between January and July.

However, Thinkbox, the marketing body for the main UK commercial television broadcasters, said the figures did not compare like with like. “Online marketing spend is made up of many things including e-mail, classified ads, display ads and, overwhelmingly, search marketing. They should be judged individually,” said Lindsey Clay, Thinkbox’s marketing director.

During the times of recession it is very hard to convince consumers to purchase/use your services. Hence I believe that traditional method of advertising and online advertising are complementary to one and other rather than a challenge for one another. More often than not a television or newspaper ad drives people to visit website for more information and hence conversion. But as online advertising is quite trackable as compared to traditional advertising it drives in the investment.

Online Advertising includes search marketing, display ads, email marketing & classified adverts. One other reason for increase in online advertising spend is that because it’s not as expensive (as compared to traditional advertising), flexible & trackable more and more local businesses are advertising online and seeing improvements in ROI.

Google UK Local Business Centre Analytics

The much awaited Google Local Business Centre reporting has been launched in the UK. Google UK have added the analytics report to its Local Business Centre. This is great tool to test the importance of Google Local Listings physically as there were no accurate numbers before.

The dashboard is quite impressive and gives the graph of impressions and click through. It also shows the top 10 impressions query terms. Most of the query terms are quite generic as opposed to being location specific. I feel that one reason for this could be that Google stores the location of it searchers and pops the local business results for generic key terms as well. For example if Google has saved your location, then any key terms you search for, Google will also try and find out local providers for the keyterm.

SEO’s can start reporting to clients on this and raise awarness of local business listing.

Google Trends in search results

Google Trends in search results

While Bing is focusing on improving the look and feel of its search results, Google is improving its search results page by providing more and more information to its searchers. Yesterday, Google announced the inclusion of anchor text links in its search results called search snippets. Google Blog “Now, included with the snippet are links to specific sections within the page, covering different subtopics of trans fats. Since we’re particularly interested in what’s healthy and what’s not, “Nutritional guidelines” is probably where the most relevant information is. Clicking this link will take you directly to that section, midway down the page.”

Today, Google announced the inclusion of ‘Google Hot Trends‘ graphical information in it’s search results on Google.com. Google Blog “Now, when you search Google.com and your query matches one of the top 100 fastest-rising search terms, we’ll show you a graph at the bottom of page, with more information — like how popular the query is, how fast it’s rising over time, and other useful data.”

Was listening to Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer’s interview with Michael Arrington, and Steve was mentioning that the next 5 years should see enhancement in search results.

Importance of On-page optimisation

Importance of On-page optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) has been broadly divided into two categories namely; on-page optimisation & off-page optimisation. Today we will discuss the on-page optimisation elements and its importance.

On-page optimisation

On-page Optimisation is the process of making the coding of the website is search engine friendly. Meaning, that when search engine crawlers crawl the website they find all the relevant information easily. It is also very important that the website is passing teh right information to the crawlers as the algorithm will process the information sent by the crawlers. Most websites are firstly not easily crawlable and do not provide correct information to the crawler.

Most of the so called cheap SEO companies optimise the homppage of the website for key terms and do not optimise the full website. This is clearly not the right practise as search engines apply good quality score to websites that are full optimised.

CaseStudy:

One of my client www.myclient.com is an E-commerce website selling beds. When the client signed in he was interested in ranking well for beds & top-level category beds, which we explained were hard to achieve due to the quality score for the website. We took over the campaign and optimised the complete website making sure that most of the on-page elements of the website was covered, as we were restricted by the CMS.

Result: The client achieved top reuslts for top key terms, but recently the client has dropped for key terms in Google. Even though the client is having a drop, the client is driving traffic and conversion from a varierty of key terms due to the complete website optimisation. If we would have concentrated on just the core key terms, the sites traffic would hav dropped considerabely.

Bing’s new Visual Search

Bing’s new Visual Search

Microsoft’s new search engine Bing have since the launch focused on look and feel & images. The image on their homepage is also very impressive and informative most of the time. Bing is ahead of all major search engines when it comes to look and feel, not something I can say about their search algorithm.

Uptill now search engines were all about typing keywords into search box and seeing a list of results. I truely feel that search engines need to explore a new way to improve searches, as opposed to the current typing keywords in search box. Well Bing seems to looking to changing the way people use search engines from keywords to clicking on images.

Well, they have moved a step forward today with the launch of their Visual Search in the US. You need to install Silverlight and change your location to US to view. Bing states ‘Why type when you can see it?’. Visual Search is a new way to formulate and refine your search queries through imagery, particularly for sets of results that tend to be more structured. Visual Search allows you to quickly scroll through the galleries or do a one-click refinement using the quick tabs on the left, which are specifically relevant to the type of results you are browsing through. The product is still under beta testing as Bing visual search is only available to a group of searches.

Note: A hint to all SEO’s, make sure you optimise your images on websites, as image search could be the future of search engines..

Google Increases Search Box Font Size

This morning, I started typing a search query in Google and noticed soemthing different with the font size. I had to checked wherether my screen resulation has been increased, it was not the case. Checked the Google Blog post and my query was answered.

Google has now supersized it’s search box to show keyword typed in bigger font. According to Google blog it will be using a 17-pixel font for the search box, up from 13 pixels. Google’s VP Marissa Mayer comments that “Google has always been first and foremost about search, and we’re committed to building and powering the best search on the web — now available through a supersized search box”. Google says that with the new larger text, users will be able to see the query typed clealry.

Google has been updating it’s search results quite frequently now, especially after the launch of Bing(Microsoft’s new search engine). Search marketers have been commenting about Bing’s impressive look and feel homepage and search results page. I clearly feel that Google’s search results page need an uplift, considering that Google is far the most searched search engine.

Check out Changes to Google’s homepage over the period.

Google had recently reduced the width of the results display space and was showing ‘Sponsored Links’ closer to natural links. It was an attempt to drive increased click through.

Everyone is aware of how Google displays Sponsored Links in a standard format, displaying the title, some text and the URL. We’ll it has started changing it’s display, where in some cases instead of text Google is showing shopping images of products along with prices; something similar to Google Shopping results.

It has also started displaying expandable list of products from a particular advitisor. Google has also introduced the structure in Google’s organic search results.

The new display should improve click through especially for E-Commerce websites. Google I guess has currently started the new format advertising with quite a few advertisors. Check your Google adwords to start showing similar results for your clients.
