Is investment in SEO on-going?

A question asked by many website owners and marketing mangers, Is investment in SEO on-going?

Yes, with the changes in search engine algorithms now becoming quite regular, it is very important to keep your website up to date from search point of view to maintain search positions. Search engines have evolved quite drastically and the algorithm has improved over the period of time to produce excellent search results. Although it hard to explain what work goes into on-going optimisation as it’s mostly off-page optimisation and more often than not invisible to the client. The results from on-going optimisation however need to be reported correctly to justify the investment.

Rand Fish from seomoz has created a great video explaining the importance of on-going SEO investment. He has broken down the SEO life cycle into three sections. You can watch the video here:

Bing’s new Visual Search

Bing’s new Visual Search

Microsoft’s new search engine Bing have since the launch focused on look and feel & images. The image on their homepage is also very impressive and informative most of the time. Bing is ahead of all major search engines when it comes to look and feel, not something I can say about their search algorithm.

Uptill now search engines were all about typing keywords into search box and seeing a list of results. I truely feel that search engines need to explore a new way to improve searches, as opposed to the current typing keywords in search box. Well Bing seems to looking to changing the way people use search engines from keywords to clicking on images.

Well, they have moved a step forward today with the launch of their Visual Search in the US. You need to install Silverlight and change your location to US to view. Bing states ‘Why type when you can see it?’. Visual Search is a new way to formulate and refine your search queries through imagery, particularly for sets of results that tend to be more structured. Visual Search allows you to quickly scroll through the galleries or do a one-click refinement using the quick tabs on the left, which are specifically relevant to the type of results you are browsing through. The product is still under beta testing as Bing visual search is only available to a group of searches.

Note: A hint to all SEO’s, make sure you optimise your images on websites, as image search could be the future of search engines..

I had written a post earlier that Microsoft’s new search engine Bing currently shows up as a referring site in the Traffic Sources reports. Google Analytics team reported “We are actively working on an update that will include Bing under the default list of search engines in Google Analytics.”.

There is a temporary solution available for advanced users; For more information on adding custom configurations to the Google Analytics tracking code, read this article.

Lycos Europe re-launch

Lycos Europe which vanised end of last year, are making effort to come back from the dead. Lycos Europe has gained rights to to use the trademarked brand names “Lycos” and “Hotbot” within the European territory.

In a statement Jungwook Lim, CEO of Lycos (which today is actually a subsidiary of Korean Internet giant Daum Communications), said: “Lycos continues to have a loyal user base and we expect this consolidation to help revitalize and strengthen our search businesses within Europe.” Does Lim have any stats to back the statement.

Chuckle along with this additional statement from Edward Noel, General Manager of Search and Business Development for Lycos, too:

“Over the next several weeks Lycos will be re-launching the provision of search services within the European territory. Locally targeted content verticals will gradually be rolled out and we will be taking steps to enhance our users’ search experience.”

Lets hope Lycos comes back with a Bing!! OOOps Bang.

Did a search for Bing on Bing.com UK and the first result is Bing.co.uk and the 10th result is Bing.com.

Although Bing.co.uk has a 301 redirect to Bing.com, it still appears higher up in search result. I don’t know whether the URL Bing.co.uk was ever live or always 301 redirected to Bing.com. There is something not right here and needs to be researched.

I guess Google’s algorithm is quite smart in this sense.

According to research data and figures Google holds more search market share as compared to Yahoo and MSN. Recent survey suggest Google hold over 65% US search share market and over 70% UK search share market.

In a recent FOX news interview with Yahoo’s new CEO Carol Bartz, about Bing traffic exceding Yahoo traffic for a day? Carol was quite un-moved and took the topic away from search and responded “[Yahoo is more than just search.] We have a much bigger job than this narrow area”. Carol believes that Yahoo search is for users comming to their website as opposed to being a search engine in itself. According to Carol, Yahoo is a much bigger and better business model as opposed to Google.

Yahoo, Yahoo Mail & AOL are quite heavily search terms in Google according to Google Trends.

Is Yahoo really bigger than Google or are they just trying to protect themselves and diverting Yahoo from a search engine?

Bing, Microsofts new search engine are promoting their revamped search engine on Google under discoverbing domian. I believe that Bing was supposed to be a ‘Google Killer’.

Google trends shows Bing to be a higher search term than Google Wave.

Microsoft’s new decision making search engine Bing has gone live. The look and feel of the search results is quite impressive with Related Searches & quick page snapshot. The Image search results are also quite impressive. Although the results would need to be evaluated over the period of time, the look and feel should keep the users interested.

Bing Seacrh Results

There has already been mixed reaction from marketing experts about Bing search results. I guess Bing would need to gain the users trust/interest from Google. Google has been an authority in search for quite a while.

Your comments on Bings experince are welcomed.
