Adrac Ltd recently delivered a presentation to City financiers about search penalties and how the internet can affect investments, both in positive and negative ways.  It revealed to investors how integral natural search is with all areas of commercial success.

One of the examples that my colleague used was that of property portal NetMovers. It had found consistent high rankings  on page one for all its keywords – apart from one period in 2008, when www.netmovers.net mysteriously disappeared from Google’s search index.

People could still visit the website by typing the name directly into their browser bar, but it was not visible on search engine results pages.

Google review of NetMovers

NetMovers had been penalised – banned from Google’s search engine results pages – without warning, notification or explanation, which is pretty standard.  According to NetMovers’ staff, the effects of the penalty were severe – web traffic fell sharply and the office phones fell silent.

Adrac’s analysis of the ban revealed it had been levied following a successful (and white hat) link building campaign – the natural search team concluded that Google’s automated system had reviewed NetMovers and interpreted the campaign’s triumph as black hat.

Nevertheless, over the next three months, Adrac’s account managers, designers and copywriters worked to ensure the website was strong, compliant and efficient.

When the ban was finally removed, www.netmovers.net returned but its ranking had suffered: users could access the portal from search engine results, but its natural search performance that our experts had built over time had dwindled.

NetMovers review branding

NetMovers decided at this point that, from a branding perspective, it wanted to change its domain and it seemed like a timely opportunity to do so. It became www.netmovers.co.uk.

Lessons learned

Over months, NetMovers recovered its previous ranking and analysis was undertaken by us and them to assess what had been learned, what could have been done better, and what the implications were for the future.

The NetMovers case reveals how even compliant websites can be affected by a ban. It also demonstrates the value of experience – nobody panicked! The situation gave Adrac the opportunity to audit NetMovers website to make sure it was spot-on which, on the whole, it was.

A skilled internet marketing agency will audit all aspects of marketing activity on an ongoing basis and keep up to date with Google’s guidelines, and there is obviously much less risk by using an agency with time-served professionals who avoid black hat activity.

Web Design Blackburn Company

It’s hard finding a really good and experienced web design company in blackburn that will also market your website. I came across a web design company in Blackburn that sure looks promising. The company Simply Creative Software, seems to be professionals in web design, e-commerce solution and database management solutions.

Some of their design and client testimonials reflects the level of experience and knowledge they posses in the industry. I would strongly recommend the company to anyone.

Had couple of my designer colleagues have a look at the so called Bing.com homepage and guess what they said? Has ASK.com revamped.

I guess you would say the same after having a look at the snapshots. Although Bing’s image looks more clearer and smart, I do not understand why Microsoft did not come out a unique design. Don’t want to take any credit away from Microsoft as the new search engine looks sharper and intelligent.

Did a search for Bing on Bing.com UK and the first result is Bing.co.uk and the 10th result is Bing.com.

Bing Search

Bing Search

Although Bing.co.uk has a 301 redirect to Bing.com, it still appears higher up in search result. I don’t know whether the URL Bing.co.uk was ever live or always 301 redirected to Bing.com. There is something not right here and needs to be researched.

I guess Google’s algorithm is quite smart in this sense.

Bing.com, Microsoft’s new search engine went live yesterday and has been attracting user interest world wide. I was just reviewing the analytics for couple of my clients to see the impact of Bing’s launch. Unfortunately, could not see any traffic from Bing under search engines section. Checked for traffic from Referrer sites and guess what I see at the top Bing.com. Apparently Google Analytics is considering Bing as a website as opposed to Search Engine. Quite Strange!!!

Bing.com traffic in Google Analytics

It could possibly be an error from Google Analytics or is Google upto something!!!

At the recent WordCamp San Francisco 2009, Matt Cutts talked about Blogging and usability of WordPress. According to Matt, WordPress covers 80-90 % of Search Engine Optimisation requirements. It also has quiet a lot of functionality that is really easily accessible.

Matt also goes on to explain how Page Rank is calculated and how search engines crawl pages with decreasing page rank. As head of the spam team, Matt clearly outlines failures of un-ethical link building and says the links need to reputable and relevant.

The presentation also covered some of the important things to remember when blogging:
1. Create a blog for yourself, not for search engines
2. Blog about something your passionate about and write as often as possible
3. Make sure your blog is Relevant and Reputable to your topic
4. Include keywords in title, alt tags, content, navigation etc. Don’t overdo the page with keyword stuffing
5. Keep simple URL structure, matt recommends dashes in URL paths
6. Use appropriate categories when posting

Microsoft have started unveiling their new search service called Bing to their employees around the world. The new Search Engine is expected to be launched later Steve Ballmer announced speaking at the D Conference today.

Bing Search Engine

Microsoft is expecting to change the way people use search engine instead of the traditional search methods. Microsoft believes that you’re like many people, you’re increasingly using search to help you make decisions: from everyday decisions, like which restaurant to eat at, to complicated decisions, like which digital camera to buy or when to fly and where to stay on your next vacation. Besides combining the power of a great search engine functionality, more organized results, and unique tools to help users make important decisions. Microsoft think of Bing as a Decision Engine.

Topsy Search Engine Error

Just spotted the following error with Topsy search engine.

Topsy Search Engine Error

I guess the site’s still in the beta version.

A new search engine Topsy finally went live this week. It not a normal search engine, but it’s a search engine for twitter. Topsy search results are citation of hyperlinks embedded with twitter messages. The information is taken from Twitter API.

Twitter has become the biggest source of content and information sharing. Thousand of people share useful links/information each day on twitter.

How does Topsy Search Work?

When a keyword is typed in Topsy, it looks at all the tweets that match the query, finds the links these tweets talk about. The algorithm then decides how much the link has been talked about. The algorithm also takes into consideration the influential of the people twitting.

Top Authors are influential people who have covered the keyterms in their twitter messages. Topsy algorithm determines who are influential people.

The co-founders would look into expanding the search engine to Facebook and other social media sites.

This is clealry a new look to search engine and should grab users attention as the links earn authority, only if they have been spoken about.

Check it Out! Topsy
